創設された70年前には自動車用変速機として使用されておりましたが発電所や船用推進システムとしてガスタービンが使用し始めるとSSSクラッチの必要性も一変しました。

SSS Completes expansion of Sunbury-on-Thames Site
In 2023 SSS Gears expanded the Sunbury-on-Thames site by doubling the factory space to over 60,000 sq ft and refurbishing the offices. The new factory includes extensive new test facilities to cope with higher demand for larger clutches for both Power Generation and Marine applications.

Through 2023 and 2024, 4 off 360T Encased SSS Clutches are supplied for Peaking Power and Synchronous Condensing into the UK to support Energy Security and Grid Stability as the level of intermittent renewable energy increases.

World's 1st Gas Turbine propelled ship fitted with SSS Clutch
Motor Gun Boat MGB 508 was originally built in 1943, but in 1947 one of its 3 reciprocating petrol engines was replaced with a Metropolitan-Vickers gas turbine which provided a boost in power when high speed was needed. The gear box incoporated an SSS Clutch which allowed the gas turbine to freewheel when the reciprocating engines were in service at low speed. The ship was renumbered as MGB 2009.
